This means respecting other people’s trademarks, copyright and being careful to avoid slander and libel.
In some (but not all) countries the law protects individuals and organizations who operate internet forums and wikis where the public contribute content.
In the USA Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act established that: “No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.”
However: as the founder of a wiki you should be responsive to user concerns and requests by deleting inappropriate content. It is easier to do this on a wiki than on most web pages; but it is probably not enough to tell the person complaining to “do it themselves”. You may also need to delete any problematic content that is stored in the page history. It is good WikiOhana to provide an email address for this kind of request.
Because of this, using moderators that check content before it goes onto the wiki actually increases legal risk. This is because you (the founder of the organisation) become an ‘approver’ of content, and therefore legally responsible for it.
