Wikis are the best choice when your project is:
- Open: where you have a group of people contributing, collaborating and helping each other without clearly defined roles, permissions or responsibilities.
- Incremental: when one part can develop without another part being completely (or even partially) finished.
- Organic: where the way information is linked and arranged isn’t dependent on a perfectly thought out “Information Architecture” - remember: a wiki is more like a bowl of minestrone soup than a club sandwich.
…and not so great for other things:
- Personal (closed) publishing: Blogs are better for this.
- Finished and/or perfectly polished content: A static webpage is a much better choice.
- Projects that need a particular structure or pre-defined navigational system.
